NP205 Introduction
Chrysler's New Process Gear Division built gear drive NP205 transfer cases for 1969-1974 and 1980-1993 Dodge Trucks. The 1969-1974 version was a remote mount unit used in W100, W200, and W300 4x4 Trucks. The quiet, cool-running, rugged, and reliable NP205 transfer case replaced the replaced the externally similar NP201 which Dodge had used for 1957-1968 civilian 4x4s.
The NP205 design uses a combination of a needle and ball bearings for the rear output shaft which lowers the operating temperature of the transfer case significantly compared to the opposed taper bearing rear output used in the NP201. The NP205 design is capable of being operated at sustained high-speed conditions typical of U.S. Interstate highways. The 1969-1974 Dodge NP205 had two significant design changes. During the 1972-1973 model years, the original equal length shift rail setup was replaced by an unequal length set and the rear output shaft was redesigned to accept a plastic speedometer gear.
For the 1975-1979 models years, Dodge dropped the NP205 in favor of the troublesome NP203 full time transfer case, but effective with the 1980 model year, the NP205 was again in the Dodge lineup. (For 1980-1993 NP205D see XV4005 Exploded View)
