Description

The interior of the climate-controlled SnoGriz Mountain Camper Prototype #1 is very functional despite the very limited space. At 60" wide x 78" long the foot print is just a bit smaller than a queen size bed, yet besides being able to sleep 2 average size adults, it has running water, a sink, fridge, toilet, table, and more.

The interior finish is basic, instead of production grade partly because this is an experimental build, but mostly because we used lumber recycled from an old barn we tore down.  In future builds we will use strong and lightweight USA Made aircraft plywood from Aircraft Plywood Mfg. (aircraftplywood.com)

Since the design called for an 8' maximum height from the ground to the top of the roof in order to fit our Jeep Gladiator test vehicle through timber lined trails, we had to limit the interior height to just under 5'. The limited height does affect bunk spacing and the ability to fully stand up but since you can sit on the lower bed, the height limitations are manageable. We will probably build the second prototype with a 5' 6" ceiling which I feel will be about the maximum size that will fit down the typical mountain trail without having to cut overhanging branches.

Refrigerator: Engel 30 Quart 12/24v Drawer Type. Located just under the lower bunk and above the front of the externally accessible cargo area. The compressor is remote mounted and vented out the back wall. Operating on 24 volts. Can operate at up to 30 degrees off level. The maximum height of contents standing up in the drawer is about 6-1/2”. Longer items will have to be laid flat or repacked to fit in the drawer. The maximum power draw is about 2.4 amps when compressor starts. Once running, power consumption drops.
Made in Thailand. MSRP: $869

Table: Steel drop down with laminated wood slide out extension by Front Runner (frontrunneroutfitters.com). A locking latch keeps the table in the stowed position when traveling. This table was designed for Jeep Wrangler tailgates. It is a nice table, but a bit on the heavy side. We will probably make our own tables for future builds using aluminum and bamboo.
Origin unknown but possibly South Africa. MSRP: $279

Hot Plates: Cooking can be done inside or outside the camper using a 120v hot plate. We have used three different size hot plates from 500w to 1500w depending upon the pan sizes packed for that particular trip. 500w is plenty for solo trips using small cookware. We also usually carry a white gas stove for outside cooking. To cook with a hot plate outside the camper, we plug a 25' extension cord into the 120v AC power outlet by the rear door and use that to reach the hot plate. A small hot plate will fit a net storage pocket. Larger plates are carried in either the cargo compartment or cab.

Sink: A Fold-Down stainless steel sink with an integral combination valve/faucet supplies pressurized cold water on demand from the fresh water tank.  Sink drains to 5.3 gallon gray water tank. Includes rubber stopper. Net storage in the bathroom area is used to hold personal hygiene items and wash clothes and towels

Fresh Water Tank: Upright 2.6” wide x 50” long 10.6 gallon tank by Front Runner is made from heavy food-grade BPA free polyethylene. At only 2.6” wide, this tank is located on the left side just in front of the entry door. The tank has 5 large tapered holes for mounting. We made tapered plastic adapters to attach the tank to a plywood mounting plate. Vent hose and outlet hose to 24 volt water pump have quick disconnects so tank can be removed for cleaning or winterization.
Tank origin unknown but possibly South Africa. MSRP: $285 (frontrunneroutfitters.com)

Gray Water Tank: A 5.3-gallon Front Runner gray water tank collects drain water from the sink. The tank is removable for cleaning or winter storage. An outlet valve allows the tank to be drained without being removed from the camper. Quick disconnects are provided on the vent and drain lines. The inlet hose has a threaded connection to the p-trap below the sink. The tank is vented to the outside to eliminate noxious odors from the living space.
Tank origin unknown but possibly South Africa (frontrunneroutfitters.com). MSRP: $155

Toilet: A Dometic 975 portable toilet is attached to the floor with factory supplied mounting brackets. Waste tank capacity is 5 gallons. A hand pump is used to pressurize the flush water tank for push-button flushing. The tank is easy to remove.
