Page 2 of 7
Dodge used both Single Rear Wheel (SRW) and Dual Real Wheel (DRW) versions of 35 Spline Dana 70B rear axles in D200, W200, D300, and W300 trucks from 1972-1979.5. These axles used a double spindle lock nut and a bend-over tab lockwasher for rear wheel bearing adjustment and retention.
1972-1979.5 Dodge Dana 70 DRW Rear Axle Features:
* Double Hex Spindle Nut
* Non-Reusable Bend-Over Tab Lockwasher between Spindle Nuts
* 1-1/2" x 35 Spline Axle Shafts
* 7/16" Studs, Split Taper Cones, and Nuts Retain the Axle Shafts
* 5/8" Wheel Studs
* 12" x 3" Drum Brakes
* DRW uses Larger Inner Wheel Bearing and Seal than SRW
* DRW Sweptline Pickup with wide-track axle introduced 1974
* DRW Pickup and Chassis-Cab Axles are Different Lengths
1972-1979.5 Dodge Model 70 rear axles had a Bill of Materials (BOM) number stamped on the rear side of the right axle tube and/or a BOM tag retained by 2 of the differential cover bolts. BOM numbers for these axles will start with "603". Each different BOM number signifies an engineering part change which may be minor or major and may involve one or more parts. The dash number indicates the axle ratio and differential type (open or locking). Unfortunately, the tags are often missing on trucks that had prior differential service.
