Description
XV-400 1998-2002 NP241DHD Transfer Case Input Shaft and Related Parts Charts and Notes for 1998-2002 Dodge Ram 2500, Ram 3500 4x4 Trucks with New Process NP241DHD (Dodge Heavy Duty) Transfer Cases. The NP241DHD was only used in some 1994-2002 Ram Heavy Duty trucks. It differs from the NP241DLD (Dodge Light Duty) Transfer Case in 3 ways.
A) Includes a mounting pad and drive gear for an optional 6 bolt Power Take Off (PTO)
B) 1-1/2" wide Drive Chain compared to 1-1/4" for the DLD
C) 1996.5 and later DHD models have a 1-5/8" x 31 spline rear output shaft. Earlier DHD and all DLD models have a 1-3/8" x 32 spline shaft
NOTE: XV400 no longer features an Input Shaft Exploded View. It has been superseded by XV4003 Complete 1998-2002 NP2421DHD Exploded View.

For manual transmission equipped 4x4 models with gas V8 engines, all used a 23 spline input except for some very late 2001-2002 production NV4500LD manual transmissions which have the same 29 spline input as Diesel/V10 trucks. Diesel and V10 powered trucks with either NV4500HD 5 speed or NV5600 6 speed manual transmissions all have 29 spline transfer case input shafts. |
Click Here for Photo. | Note 2: NP241DHD Transfer Case Input Shaft Length: For the 1998-2002 model years, an input shaft with an approximate over all length of 4-5/16” is used with all 46RE and 47RE automatic transmissions. Manual transmission applications have input shafts that are about 5-3/64” long. To provide a simpler reference dimension, some of our parts descriptions and notes may refer to the 4-5/16" shaft as a 4-1/4" shaft. Likewise, a 5-3/64" shaft may be referred to as a 5" or 5-1/8" shaft length. |
Note 3: Input Bearing Width: NP241DHD Transfer Cases were built with input shafts using either a narrow (5/8” wide) or wide (15/16” wide) Input Ball Bearing. While a narrow bearing cannot be used on an input made for the wide bearing and visa-versa, the combined matching bearings and shafts are totally interchangeable. For example, If you are doing a manual transmission swap on a 1998 Automatic transmission equipped Cummins powered truck with NP241DHD Assembly number 52105028, you can replace the original QU50640 23 Spline Input Shaft/QU50874 Narrow Bearing with QU10889 29 Spline Input Shaft/QU50873 Wide Bearing. Click Here for Detailed Photo | Note 4: The Input Shaft Range Clutch Teeth are machined inside the back of the Input Shaft. The Sliding Clutch Collar will engage the Range Clutch Teeth in High Range. Single Cut or 1-Way teeth are beveled in one direction. Double Cut or 2-Way Teeth are beveled the same to left and right. Input Shafts with 1-Way Synchro teeth were only used on 1999.5 to 2002 NP241DHD models on vehicles with automatic transmissions and some 2002 cases in manual transmission Ram trucks. Note 7: 23 Spline Input with 1 Way Clutch Teeth: For 1999.5-2002 automatic transmission equipped Ram 2500, Ram 3500 4x4s with NP241DHD Transfer Cases and wide input bearings, New Process used QU10179 4-5/16” long input shaft with 1-Way Synchro Clutch Teeth (See Note 4). At this time, the aftermarket does not make a 23 spline 4-5/16” long input shaft for the wide input bearing. We recommend you use QU10179 Genuine NPG Input for these applications, but you can also use QU52100 Aftermarket Input plus QU50874 Narrow Bearing. | |
Note 8: Front Case Includes: QU11143 New NP241DHD Front Case Sub-Assembly includes The Front Case Half, Annulus Gear, Annulus Gear Snap Ring, 15/16” Wide Input Bearing, Input Bearing to Case Snap Ring, Front Output Bearing, Front Output Bearing to Case Snap Ring, and Front Output Seal. To Use this Case Half with a narrow bearing Input Shaft, also order QU50874 Bearing. | |
Note 9: Input Shaft to Mainshaft Pilot Bearing: Two totally Interchangeable Bearing Types were used. QU50114 is a unitized, closed end needle bearing. Also used was X10000 Open End Needle Bearing plus QU50083 Cup Type Soft Plug. In most cases, the factory also used Bearing Lock on the Outside Diameter of the Bearing and Soft Plug to minimize the possibility of oil seepage between the transmission and Transfer Case.
