1998-2004 Dodge NV4500HD Introduction
New Venture NV4500HD (Heavy Duty) transmissions were made at GM’s Muncie, Indiana transmission plant for 1994-2004 model year Dodge Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 trucks with either gas V10 or Cummins Diesel engines. The NV4500HD is fully synchronized and rated to 460 lb. Ft. of input torque. It has a 1-1/4" 10 spline input shaft and a 29-spline rear output shaft. The factory listed weight of the complete transmission is 195 pounds.
The NV4500HD is a smooth shifting and reasonably quiet transmission when equipped with stock type synchronizers and filled with the correct oil. From a durability standpoint, it is a far better and stronger transmission than the Getrag G360 which Dodge used in 1989-1993 model trucks, but the mainshaft 5th gear is inadequately supported and over time it will usually loosen up and work the mainshaft retaining nut off. This is the infamous "5th gear failure" that is most prevalent in Diesel powered trucks, but it can occur in gas engine models also. For more information see my Tech Article:
NV4500 Fifth Gear Failures and Solutions.
The NV4500HD has a conventional top-loader design that is relatively easy to rebuild with a sturdy work bench, a good manual, and a few special tools.
