1991-1993 Dodge Dana 70-2U 32 Spline Rear Axle Introduction
Page 2 of 17
Dodge used both Single Rear Wheel (SRW) and Dual Real Wheel (DRW) versions of 32 Spline Dana 70 rear axles in D/W250 and 350 trucks from 1991-1993. These axles will be found in trucks built after November 12 1990. There are two sub-models with different housings. Dana 70-2U axles were used for 3.54 and slower ratios and Dana 70-2UA (or Model 71) axles are found in trucks with 3.07 axle ratios. While many parts are interchangeable between the 2 models, the axle housings and gear sets are not.
1991-1993 Dodge Dana 70 series rear axles changes from 1990:
1-7/16" x 32 spline axle shafts (1-1/2" x 35 spline for 1972-1990) 7/16" Hardened Bolts retain the axle shafts (studs/cones 1972-90) Higher strength, shot-peened gearing (To handle Cummins torque)
The single and dual rear wheel axles have different widths, spindles, hubs, and inner wheel bearings. All 1989-1993 Diesel 3/4 ton trucks will have a Dana 70 single rear wheel rear axle. Most gas engine D/W 250 series trucks use a Dana 60 instead of a Dana 70 unless equipped with a snow plow package or other heavy-duty option.
All 1991-1993 Dodge Model 70 rear axles had a Bill of Materials tag (BOM) retained by 2 of the differential cover bolts. BOM numbers will start with "605". Each different BOM number signifies an engineering part change which may be minor or major and may involve one or more parts. The dash number indicates the axle ratio and differential type (open or locking). Unfortunately, these tags are often missing on trucks that had prior differential service.
