Ford was 1-5 years behind all other U.S. 4x4 manufacturers when disc brakes were finally introduced for the 4x4 F100 in the 1976 model year. The disc brakes were standard equipment and most of the brake components are the same as used on 4x2 models.
The 1976-1977 F100 and F-150 Dana 44 axles are open knuckle type, and they have replaceable upper and lower ball joints pressed into the steering knuckles. The axle tube outside diameter is 2-3/4". Suspension is 3-Link, Coil Spring type with cast iron radius arms and a tracking bar. The bushings for the radius arms and tracking bar are replaceable.
1976-1977 F-100 and F150 Dana 44 front axles were available with 3.50 or 4.09 axle ratios. Most 1976-1977 axles have open differentials, but an optional Trac-Lok® clutch type Limited Slip Differential was optional with 3.50 and 4.09 ratios.
The 1976-1977 F150 was offered as a "Heavy-Duty" 1/2 ton with a gross weight of over 6,000 pounds to bypass weight based emissions regulations in effect at that time. The front axle rating of 3500 pounds was the same for both the F100 and F150. 1977 was the last year Ford used a front axle housing with 2-3/4" tubes. Effective with the 1978 model year, a front axle with 3" tubes was used and several significant design changes were made.
