XV1064 1977.5-1980 Chevy & GMC 3/4 Ton Dana 44 Front Axle Exploded View

The Dana 44 was the sole front drive axle used by GM from 1973 to 1976 for SUV's, 1/2 ton, and 3/4 ton 4x4 vehicles. In 1977, GM started to replace the Dana 44 with the all new corporate, 10 bolt, 8-1/2" Ring Gear, beam type solid 4x4 front drive axle, however, the Dana 44 continued to be used by GM to the 1979 model year for 1/2 tons and 1980 for 3/4 tons after which it was dropped entirely from the GM lineup. For the Dana 44, 1977-1/2 also marked a change in the hub and spindle design for all models.

These later production axles all have the internal spline type wheel hub similar to what was used on the 1/2 tons. The factory lockout hubs were made by Dana Spicer, but except for the axle shaft snap rings, no parts are interchangeable between the internal mount and external mount lockouts that had been used on earlier 3/4 ton models.

For the wheel seal and inner wheel bearing, 1977 is the transition year where you could have either early or late bearing types. The two types are not interchangeable! 1973-1977.5 : 3.50" OD Inner Wheel Bearing Cup. 1977.5-1979: 3.23" OD Inner Wheel Bearing Cup.

GM Dana 44 and GM 10 bolt front axles of the same vintage use the same spindles, hubs, brakes, ball joints, axle u-joints, and outer axle shafts however the inner shafts and differential parts are entirely different.
