1995-1997 Ford F250 D50IFS Front Axle Introduction
The Dana 50 Independent Front Suspension (IFS) Twin Traction Beam (TTB) 4x4 front drive axle used in 1995, 1996, and 1997 Ford F250 4x4s has a rated capacity of 4600 pounds. The Dana 50IFS axle uses two stamped steel axle beams that can move up and down independently.
The 1995-1997 Dana 50IFS Twin Traction Beam Front Axle uses many of the same components as the 1994 and earlier axles, but there are some very significant differences also. Parts unique to the 1995-1997 axle include hub/rotor assembly, all brake components, steering knuckles, and locking hubs. On trucks with the auto hub option, the spindle nut parts are also unique to 1995-1997 axles.
The Dana 50IFS front axle is reasonably durable, but it does require a fair amount of maintenance to keep it in top operating condition and to maintain steering quality.
Tire edge wear can be an issue with these axles because the tire camber (the difference between the vertical axis of the front wheels and the vertical axis of the vehicle when viewed from the front) will change depending upon load and the condition of the leaf springs. Camber can be adjusted by using a different offset upper Ball Joint Bushing.
