For parts identification purposes, a Round Tag (shown at left; click on picture to enlarge image) is affixed to the back of the rear case. Stamped on the tag are the Model Number (NV271F), Assembly Number (10 to 11 character alpha-numeric number code), Transfer Case Build Date, and Low Range Ratio (2.72). In most cases, parts identification is pretty straight forward with the year and assembly number, but there are times we may need additional information such as the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), engine, transmission, transfer case build date, or truck model. Transfer Cases built in the U.S. have the NPG Logo and the legend New Process Gear Syracuse, New York in red plus wording to identify what each number signifies.
