Description
Since the mid-1960's Ford Dana monobeam front axles have been built with a Bill of Material (BOM) Tag affixed to the differential cover by two cover bolts. Typically, the BOM tag will be stamped with the Dana Axle Bill of Material Number, the Ford Axle Code, and the axle ratio. Most axles from 1990-on will also have a white data decal on the right axle beam.
The BOM number up until around mid 2004 was a 6 digit number beginning with 6. From mid 2004-on, a seven digit number beginning with 2 is used. Both number strings are followed by a 1 or 2 digit dash number that indicates ratio, differential, and equipment options. The BOM number is what we use to positively identify your axles build configuration.
The example shown here is stamped with BOM number 2009787-1 which tells us this axle is a Super 60 from a 2008 F-450 Super Duty with 4.30 axle ratio and open differential.
The white Ford Data Plate Decal used on circa 1990 and newer axles is made to last, but eventually most of them become unlegible or fall off, but if it is there, and you can read it, you will find the following information:
Dana BOM number
Ford Axle Code,
Axle Serial Number
Ford Axle Assembly Part Number
Date/Time your axle was built.
