Tech Note 2: Ball Joint Size
The Ball Joints used on all 4x4 Ford Excursion and all 1999 to 2004 Ford Super Duty 4x4 trucks are the same size. In my opinion, the basic design and size of these parts is adequate for the lighter Excursions, F-250, and F350 models, but I do not believe this size of Ball Joint is really large enough for the heavy Gross vehicle Weight dual rear wheel F450, and F-550 models, especially those with snow plows or longer wheelbases that put a greater percentage of weight on the front axle compared to short wheel base trucks. Ford apparently agreed because 2005 and newer F-450 and F-550 trucks have much larger Ball Joints than the preceding generation. I don't have a solution for this situation as the potential durability issues are due to size and NOT component quality.
Tech Note 3: Ball Joint Type
Which is better Greaseable or Non-Greaseable Ball Joints? The answer really depends on you. How good your maintenance is and how wet your operating conditions are. For the today's average truck owner, a non-greaseable Ball Joint Set will probably last as long or longer than greaseable parts that are poorly maintained. If you operate under a lot of wet conditions and you are good about regular maintenance, than greaseable Ball Joints should provide significantly longer life than nongreaseable Ball Joints under the same conditions. If you are somewhere in the middle, it is a hard call to make as the increased cost of quality greaseable Ball Joints may or may not be justified by the potential for increased part life. See QK4592 for our Greaseable Ball Joints.
Tech Note 4: Manufactured by Dana-Spicer
All our nongreaseable Ball Joint sets for your Ford are manufactured by Dana-Spicer, the company that built your front axle. I have found these Ball Joints to have by far the lowest warranty rate of any Ball Joints we tried including some famous brands that spend an awful lot of money on glitzy magazine ads. I am not going to make the claim they are the best of the best, but I can say with a 1 year warranty return rate of well under 1% going back over a decade they are the best we have found so far.
Tech Note 5: Ball Joint Press Set
Using our TS4511 Ball Joint Press Set is the easiest and safest way to press out your old Ball Joints and install the new ones but it is not the only way. Other methods can be used, but you have to be careful for safety reasons and to prevent breaking your steering knuckles.
