QA10009 Master NV4500 Mainshaft Shim Set has a broad selection of shims that closely mirrors the original New Venture Shim Set. QA10009 includes one of each of 9 Shim sizes from 0.016" to 0.035". All sizes plus or minus 0.0015". Most of the Shims in this Kit are made for us in the U.S.A. from high-performance, tear-resistant, heat-treated blue-tempered spring steel, balance of shims are original equipment type cold-formed steel.

Tech Note 1: End-Play
NV4500 Mainshaft end-play should be set at 0.002-0.006" measured with a dial indicator. I always try to get the end-play reading at the lower end of the allowable range as end-play will increase as the bearings wear. Correct Mainshaft end-play will help provide longer bearing life, smoother shifting and cooler running. See my TM1003 NV4500 Shop Manual for the correct service procedures to set and adjust end-play.
Tech Note 2: Shim Kits
The NV4500 mainshaft rear bearing cup is a slip fit in the transmission housing. It is not uncommon to find worn or torn main shaft shims in high mileage transmissions or those subjected to high horsepower. The thinnest original equipment NV4500 shim was about 0.016" thick to help minimize the chance of the shim tearing. Our inexpensive QU10009B Basic Shim Kit is supplied by the aftermarket. The thin 0.011" shims are nice for changing the shim pack thickness, but I personally will not use a shim of that thickness in one of our transmissions. We offer the Basic Kit as a low cost way to get the correct end-play, but if you want to do a first-class, professional quality rebuild, order our QA10009 Master Shim Kit which includes the following shim sizes: 0.015", 0.018", 0.020", 0.022", 0.025', 0.028", 0.030", 0.032", 0.035". Most Shims in Master Kit are Tempered Blue Spring Steel for maximum durability. Tolerance for all Shim Sizes in Master Kit - 0.0015".
Tech Note 3: Thickness
Most NV4500 transmissions will require between 0.030" and 0.050" of total shim pack thickness for the commonly available mainshafts.

Tech Note 5: Lubricants, Sealants, Threadlockers
Early production NV4500 Transmissions used an anaerobic sealant (QU90003) to seal between the main case and input bearing retainer, top cover, and rear housing. Mid-production units used anaerobic sealant just on the input retainer and RTV for everything else. Later production transmissions used black RTV Sealant (QU90006 or QU90005) for everything. Either type of sealant works fine (except the PTO covers ALWAYS should be sealed with RTV), but I prefer RTV for all components. Regardless of which sealant you use, make sure excess sealant does not block the lube access hole at the top of input retainer pilot that fits into the transmission case! Also, the threaded holes in the main case for the four retainer bolts and 12 PTO bolts are open ended, so you must use new bolts with factory applied threadlocker or apply Threadlocker (S24200) to your existing bolts to prevent oil seepage past the bolt threads.
