Description
QK4601 Inner Axle Shaft Seal Kit for 1984-1987.5 Jeep Front Axles with vacuum controlled Central Axle Disconnect (CAD) on 1984-1987.5 Jeep Cherokee or Comanche (XJ) and early 1987 Wrangler (YJ) models. The passenger side axle shaft seals on these models are almost impossible to install without our installation tools. QK4601 Kit for both sides make inner axle oil seal installation easy and almost fool-proof on your Jeep 4x4 equipped with the factory vacuum controlled Central Axle Disconnect (CAD) system. Our special, CNC Precision Machined, solid steel Seal Installers support these difficult to install seals in 3 locations so the seal cannot cock or get crushed during installation. If you need to replace your axle shaft seals, this is the way to go! Includes QU40307 Left Axle Seal, QU40105 Right Axle Seal, QT1139 Left Seal Installer, QT1002 Right Seal Installer, QT1048 Alloy Steel Rod with hardware, QT1230 Thrust Plate, QU40090 CAD (central axle disconnect) gasket.

Tech Note 2: Removal/Installation
Whenever you remove the front axle shafts on your Jeep, inspect the shafts and axle tubes for any signs of differential fluid leakage. It's a lot cheaper and easier to replace the seals than rebuilding your diff after it blows up due to oil starvation! Differential removal is required for the left (drivers) side seal, but not the the disconnect (right) side on vacuum shift axles. These are tricky seals to install, but you can EASILY do it with one of these kits! QT1032 differential case spreader is definitely recommended but not absolutely required for differential removal/installation. We also find QT9018 dead-blow sledge handy to reinstall the differential. Extra seals, differential cover gaskets, and RTV sealant are available separately.
Tech Note 3: Use Proper Tools
Successfully installing a CAD axle shaft seal without the correct Seal Installer has about the same chance of success as buying a winning lottery ticket. Makeshift methods don't usually get the job done due to the restricted area you need to work in, and the amount of compression needed to be applied to the seal. Due to the way we have to make the Tool, your Seal Installer and Seal MUST match. QT1002 Right Seal Installer will only work with original equipment design, NOK manufactured seals such as our QU40105. QT1139 Left Seal Installer will only work with original equipment design, NOK manufactured seals such as our QU40307. Seals manufactured by other seal manufacturers WILL NOT WORK WITH OUR INSTALLERS!!!! We do not manufacture installers for this application to fit any other competitive seal designs such as CR, National or NAK.
Tech Note 4: BOM Chart
QK4624 Kit does not work on 1984-1987.5 XJ or early 1987 YJ models with CAD. These early production CAD axles use QU40105 Seal which has a larger diameter. All 1984-1986 Jeep XJ CAD axles use QU40105 Seal. The only 1987 XJ axle that used QU40105 was on early production XJs with axle Bill of Material number 610175. For the 1987 YJ, early production vehicles with BOM 610259 use QU40105 Seal. All other 1987 Jeep Dana 30 CAD axles have the smaller Seal included in QK4624 Kit. If you have a 1987 XJ, check the axle Bill of Material (BOM) number which is stamped on the front of the right axle tube next to the differential housing and also on a metal tag held on by the two farthest right differential cover bolts before ordering parts.

*The Wrangler was first sold to the public starting in May 1986 as a 1987 model. The Jeep Parts Book does not give a serial number or date break for the inner axle seal size change, but according to Dana's database, BOM 610259 was used on 1987 model year Wranglers built in 1986. |
