QK1016 Complete Cooler Kit

QK1016 Complete Cooler Kit for Most 4, 5, and 6 speed 4x4 and 3/4 ton to 1-1/2 ton Truck Manual Transmissions bolts in place of one of your PTO Covers.  Fits all makes of manual transmissions and transfer cases with two standard 6 bolt PTO covers! Bolt thread is size 3/8" x 16 (USS Coarse Thread) which is the SAE standard thread on most heavy-duty North American light truck manual transmissions including Borg Warner T18, T19, T98, Muncie SM465, New Process NP435, NP445, New Venture NV4500, NV5600, and ZF S5-420, S5-470, S5-470M, S6-650, S6-750. Most of these manual transmission models except the ZF 6 speeds which only have a left PTO mount, were available with either 1 or 2 PTO Mounting locations depending upon the vehicle configuration. Before ordering this Kit, make sure YOUR transmission has a 6 Bolt PTO cover on each side!  

Note: Dodge/Ram Getrag G360 5 speed and G56 6 speed transmissions use 10mm metric bolts which are NOT supplied in this Kit! See QK1017 for Kit with metric bolts.

Tech Note 1: Deburred Housings
As supplied to us, the extruded aluminum Filter Housings have some sharp edges and/or burrs that can cut skin. We deburr each and every housing to minimize the chances of cuts.

Tech Note 2: Cooler
The fins on the extruded aluminum cooler housing greatly increases the surface area available that conducts heat from the oil to the air. Our Coolers can reduce your transmission oil operating temperature by up to 30° which is especially beneficial for 5 and 6 transmissions operated in overdrive. In direct drive, (4th for a 5 speed or 5th for a 6 speed) the power transfer is efficient and direct from the input shaft to the output shaft with no loads placed on the gear teeth or countershaft bearings. In overdrive, the power transfer from the input to the output is through the countershaft which means 4 gears and 6 bearings are under load and creating additional heat that can breakdown your transmission fluid. In the QK1016 Kit, one housing supplied with both a 3/8" filler Plug and a 1/4" drain plug that can be replaced by a temperature sending unit.

Tech Note 3: Filter
Most manual transmissions have no way to filter grit and wear particles from the oil. This means damaging contaminants in your oil will be constantly run through your bearings and gears which of course means even more junk in the oil and the ugly and expensive specter of early, catastrophic part failures. The QK1015 Filter can be installed on any manual transmission or transfer case with a standard SAE 6 Bolt Power Take Off Cover Plate on one or both sides of the gear case (The PTO Covers are often mistaken for an "Inspection Plate"). QK1015 fits popular transmissions like Borg Warner T18, T19, and T98 4 speeds, Dodge G56 6 Speed (use QK1017 instead of QK1015), Muncie SM420 and SM465 4 Speeds, New Process NP435 4 Speed, New Venture NV4500 5 Speed, New Venture NV5600 6 Speed, ZFS5-420 and S5-470 5 Speeds and ZF 6 Speed light truck transmissions. QK1015 also fits NP205 and NP241DHD transfer cases along with Borg Warner chain drive transfer cases with PTO covers. The QK1015 works because of the movement of oil inside a transmission or transfer case. Oil in a gearbox is in constant, high-speed, motion when the vehicle is in operation. If you ever had the top cover off a transmission and absent mindlessly started the engine with a remote starter switch, you have seen how much and how fast the oil gets thrown about. When a QK1015 Filter is installed on your transmission or transfer case, and you are running at highway speeds, oil is thrown into the QK1015 inlet at high speed and with tremendous volume. It does not take long for crud in your oil to get trapped in the filter. Even at an idle, oil is constantly flowing through the filter element. In summary, The QK1015 Manual Transmission and Transfer Case Filter Kit is effective and...... a whole lot cheaper than gears and bearings!

Tech Note 4: Increased Oil Capacity
Each Filter or Cooler/Filter will increase your transmission oil capacity by approximately 1 quart. To help monitor your transmission oil level, one of the 1/4" thick outer plates is equipped with a rugged sight glass.

Tech Note 5: Clearance to Other Components
You have to have sufficient clearance around the transmission PTO openings to install the filters. Each Aluminum Housing is 3" wide. The plain outside Cover Plate is 1/4" thick. Maximum Thickness of the Cover Plate with Sight Glass is about 3/4". The inside Filter Plate is 5/64" thick.
Including the nuts and bolts which add about 3/8", the minimum clearances typically needed to install are:
Cooler with Filter and Plain Cover Plate: 4-1/4"
Cooler with Sight Glass: 4-1/2"
If you don't have enough room to install the tall 3" wide coolers, use QK1014 Slim 1-7/8" Double Cooler Kit instead
