Tech Note 1: End-Play
Correct Countershaft end-play will help provide longer bearing life, smoother shifting and cooler running. The factory Countershaft end-play for all New Venture NV4500 5 speed manual transmissions is 0.002"-0.006" measured with a dial indicator. See my TM1003 NV4500 Shop Manual for the correct service procedures to set and adjust end-play.

Tech Note 2: Included Sizes
To provide the greatest flexibility to assemble the precise shim pack you need for optimum NV4500 Countershaft end-play, QA10008 Master Shim Kit includes one each of the following Shims: 0.009", 0.012", 0.015", 0.018" 0.020", 0.022", 0.025" 0.027". In most transmissions, you will use a combination of two shims from QA10008 Kit to get the precise dial indicator reading you desire.
(Tolerance for all Shim Sizes in Kit is =/- 0.0015")

Tech Note 3: Location
NV4500 Countershaft Shims are located between the Countershaft Rear Bearing Cup and Countershaft Bearing Thrust Plate.

Tech Note 4: Lubricants, Sealants, Threadlockers
Early production NV4500 Transmissions used an anaerobic sealant (QU90003) to seal between the main case and input bearing retainer, top cover, and rear housing. Mid-production units used anaerobic sealant just on the input retainer and RTV for everything else. Later production transmissions used black RTV Sealant (QU90006 or QU90005) for everything. Either type of sealant works fine (except the PTO covers ALWAYS should be sealed with RTV), but I prefer RTV for all components. Regardless of which sealant you use, make sure excess sealant does not block the lube access hole at the top of input retainer pilot that fits into the transmission case! Also, the threaded holes in the main case for the four retainer bolts and 12 PTO bolts are open ended, so you must use new bolts with factory applied threadlocker or apply Threadlocker (S24200) to your existing bolts to prevent oil seepage past the bolt threads. Tech Note 6: Do Not Use
Do not use Countershaft Shims that are under 0.009" thick in an NV4500 transmission. Shims thinner than a nominal 0.009" will break apart from the forces transmitted by the countershaft bearing cup.
