Tech Note 1: About
QU50816 is a 5 piece basic Pinion Preload Shim Set supplied by an aftermarket vendor and it is usually adequate to set most pinion rotating torque values within the factory specification range. The exact thicknesses of the individual shims may vary from Set to Set. Typically, the shim sizes are: 0.010", 0.012", 0.015", 0.018", 0.021". Tech Note 2: Pinion Depth
Pinion Depth must be set before setting pinion preload. Dana 70 and most Dana 60 axles use shims located between the pinion stem and outer pinion bearing to set pinion preload. Pinion preload sets the amount of torque required to rotate the pinion and it is measured with an inch pound torque wrench. Increase shim pack thickness to decrease pinion preload. Decrease shim pack thickness to increase pinion preload.

Tech Note 3: Bolt Pattern
Dana Spicer solid beam Model 50, 60, Super 60, 61, 70, 70B, 70U, 70-2U, and 70HD axles all use the same bolt pattern for the differential cover so trying to identify what your exact axle model is can be difficult. In most cases, knowing the year and truck model will narrow the search considerably, but the best way to ID your exact axle and internal parts is with the Bill of Material number that is stamped on the right axle tube on mid 1980's and older axles or on a metal tag affixed to the differential cover by two cover bolts. On 1990's and newer Ford axles you may also find the BOM number on a decal stuck to one of the axle beams.
