Applications

Tech Note 1: Always Replace
Always replace the cup and cone at the same time. The matching Bearing Cup is QU50406.

Tech Note 2: Bearing Installer
Use QT1003 Bearing Installer to seat this bearing on your pinion gear.

Tech Note 3: Verify Bearing Needed
Depending upon the year and build configuration, Dana 70 front and most mid 1980's and newer standard Dana-Spicer Model 70 axles use this bearing and QU50406 3.5" diameter bearing cup . You will also find most mid 1980's and older, Model 70 axles use a 4-1/8" bearing cup (QU50409) plus QU50602 bearing.

Tech Note 4: 1988 Square Body Trucks
1988 R and V series, old square body style 3500 series Chevy and GMC trucks were built with both 1st and 2nd design, 14 Bolt full floating rear axles. This Bearing fits 1st design axles using an inner pinion bearing cup that is 3-1/2" in diameter. Second design axles have an inner pinion bearing cup diameter of 3-3/4" and use Bearing QU50693.

Tech Note 5: Prior to 1990's
Until the 1990's all Dana-Spicer Model 70 series axles used shims between the inner Pinion Bearing and the Pinion Head to set the pinion rotating preload. There may or may not have been a Slinger between the bearing and pinion head and/or a baffle under the cup. Some Model 70 axles built since that time use one or more shims between the Pinion Bearing and Pinion Head to set the pinion depth. Regardless of the shim configuration, the combined thickness of shims, and any inner Slinger or baffle is what will set the pinion depth. Gear sets and Pinion Shim Kits may fit several applications, so you may find you have a kit with an inner Slinger or baffle that differs from original. As a rule, unless otherwise instructed, only use an inner baffle or Slinger if your axle was originally built with the exactly the same type of part. The only exception would be when the gear or shim manufacturer specifically instructs you to use a different combination than original equipment.
