Applications

Tech Note 1: Replace Chain
If you are investing the time in rebuilding your vintage Ford BW1356 transfer case, replace the chain while you are at it. With the Borg Warner 1356 Transfer Cases, the Drive Chain is only under power in 4x4 modes. For 4x2 operation, the input shaft is directly coupled to the rear output shaft. Contrary to popular belief, a worn or stretched BW1356 chain can not cause a clunk in 4x2 mode, however a stretched chain CAN and will wear a hole in the soft aluminum transfer case if it sags enough to contact the housing.

Tech Note 2: Replace Bearings
Replace your transfer case bearings when you replace the chain. BW1356 transfer cases all depend upon a simple oil pump to lubricate the upper shafts and bearings in 4x2 mode. The relatively coarse mesh oil inlet screen is at the bottom of the case and it will suck up metal filings and pump them to the shafts and bearings. If your chain is worn or stretched, chances are the bearings are going to show some pitting as a minimum.

Tech Note 3: Identifying Model
For the 1987 to 1997 models years, Ford offered multiple transfer case models for most full size 4x4s in any given year. Identifying your exact case is usually simple. For Borg Warner Models, the 1345 or 1356 model number is cast in the rear case half.
