Tech Note 1: Only Used By Ford
These 1-3/16" cup size external snap ring axle u-joints were only used by Ford. 1976 and 1977 Ford F-250 crew cab trucks have a Dana 60 front axle that uses two of these u-joints. Ford introduced the Dana 50 Traction Beam® independent front suspension axle for the 1980 model year as an option on F-250 and standard equipment on F-350 4x4s. The Dana 50 IFS axle has 3 axle universal joints, one for the left side and two for the right side. For the 460 gas engine and later diesel trucks, this size u-joint is a bit on the small size. We offer these QA4874 Greaseable U-joint as an inexpensive alternative to our D471390 solid cross original equipment, non-greaseable u-joint which is our maximum strength option for these axles. QA4874 Greaseable U-joint is a whole lot cheaper compared to D471390, but there is some strength loss since it is cross-drilled for grease passage.
Tech Note 2: U-Joint Press Tooling
The beefed up axle yokes on Ford Dana 50IFS and Dana 60 axles can pose installation problems. With new or good condition axle shafts, D471390 and QA4874 just barely clear the yokes as you pivot the cross into place. However due to heavy corrosion or improper removal procedures, the yoke ears may get compressed when removing the old u-joint which can cause installation problems getting the cross in place and make you curse a blue streak when you try to install the second snap ring in the sprung yoke. Tech Note 3: Lubricate
Lubricate the universal joint periodically with QU90018 Pyroplex® Plus Synthetic Grease or other quality, water resistant NLGI #2 GC-LB grease. Service intervals for this greaseable universal joint will vary with your driving conditions and type of grease you use, but as a minimum, you should grease your u-joints at every oil change or every three months whichever comes sooner. Lube more frequently in extremely wet conditions or after submersion under water. Remember, a greaseable joint that is not regularly lubed will prematurely fail from water contamination or grease loss.
