Tech Note 2: Must Remove
Your brakes, wheel hubs, axle shafts, and differential must be removed from the housing to replace your QU40059 inner axle shaft seals.

Tech Note 3: Seal Type
The inner axle seals used on all Chevy, Dodge, Ford, GMC, and IHC King Pin type, open knuckle Dana Model 60 and Model 61 Front Axles are the same. The same seals and tools also fit 1992-1997 Dana 60 Ball Joint axles in Ford F350 4x4s. The seals and tools are different for 1976 and prior closed knuckle Dana 60 front axles and on all 1999 and newer Ford and 1994-2002 Dodge trucks with ball joint type Model 60 axles.

Tech Note 4: Seal Depth
QK4656 uses QT1042 adjustable depth installer which allows you to offset the seal to miss a worn spot on the axle shaft. This is a valuable feature, however, YOU have to determine the final depth of the seal. It is possible to seat the seal too deep with QT1042 installer which can put the seal beyond the machined seal surface of the axle shaft. We also offer QK4867 Seal Installer Set which uses QT1156 Model 60 specific Depth Stop Seal Installer which has a raised flange on it that will stop against the axle bore face when the seal is at the correct depth. This is a more fool-proof setup, but it is a little more expensive and you cannot vary the seal depth to miss a groove worn in the axle shaft.

Tech Note 5: Before Installing
For the 1992-1997 model years Ford F350 axles came from the factory with a now discontinued oil bath type inner axle oil seal instead of the QU40059 seal used in 1991 and prior axles. Production of the oil bath seal ended in 1999 when QU40244 redesigned seal was introduced for the new Super Duty. Although the new seal has the correct ID and OD, the outside diameter of the axle shaft guide has an interference problem with the 1992-1997 era axle tubes. For 2011, Ford replaced the QU40244 seal with a new QU20463 oil bath seal which will work in the 1992-1997 axles. Tech Note 6: Always Inspect
When replacing your inner axle seals, ALWAYS inspect your King Pin Parts, Axle Universal Joints, Differential Bearings, Wheel Bearings, and Spindle Bearings/Seals for wear or damage. The extra time needed to replace these components is minimal since you already have the axle apart to do the axle seals.

Tech Note 7: Removing
Once the axle is disassembled, the old seals can be easily removed with our TS4862 Seal Remover Tool Set or other suitable tool such as a length of sturdy pipe that will fit inside the axle tube. You will also need to clean the inside of the axle tube to remove dirt and crud that could get pushed into your new seal during reassembly.
