Tech Note 1: Product Note
QU42009 is a original equipment Dana Tapered Bushing part number for both Dana 60/70 rear axle shafts and Dana 44 closed knuckle front steering arms retained by 7/16" studs. Length is is about 4/10" long. For rear axle shafts, 5/16" long QU40577 is available at a lower cost. QU40577 can NOT be used in place of QU42009 for steering arms because the steering arms used on standard Dana 44 closed knuckle front axles have a deeper bore compared to rear axle shafts.
Tech Note 2: Split in Bushing
The idea of using a split taper bushing is to eliminate all axle shaft to fastener air gaps thereby minimizing the chance the fasteners loosen up and shear the studs under high load situations. Tapered Axle Shaft Bushings are ONLY used with studs as the split allows the wedge to compress around the shank.
Tech Note 3: Installation
To remove the wedges, they must first be loosened up by vibration so they can expand slightly. Typically, you take off the locking nuts (and washers if present). An air hammer or large hammer/punch combination is then used to apply impact force to the noncritical open areas of the axle shaft flange. Sooner or later, the impact vibration will loosen the tapered wedges which can then be removed with QT1060 or other suitable tool. Never apply impact force to the stud, bushing or lathe center hole of the axle shaft!
Tech Note 4: Adapter
QU42009 is referred to as an Adapter in most original equipment vehicle parts books.
