Tech Note 1: Product Note
Our QU40947 housings were built around 2003 and sold surplus a couple of years later to a large gear shop that took out and sold the gears and diffs before going out of business a few years ago. The housings have always been stored inside, but there may be some minor spots of surface rust from long storage. They are otherwise in near perfect condition.

Tech Note 2: Disc Brakes
QU40947 has mounting flanges for DISC brakes. It will NOT work on 2001.5 and earlier Ram trucks with drum brakes.

Tech Note 3: Axle Housings/Covers
Dodge lists slightly different axle housings and rear covers for both 4x4 and 4x2 trucks. The housing difference is the angle of the spring pads in relation to the pinion center line. 4x4 trucks have a higher ride height, so the pinion is tipped up slightly more than 4x2 models. QU40947 is listed for 4x2 trucks. These axle housings will physically fit 4x4 trucks, but in the unlikely event a pinion angle change is needed to cure a driveshaft vibration, that is your responsibility.

Tech Note 4: Fill Plug
The 4x2 and 4x4 covers differ in the location of the fill plug. The 4x4 covers have the fill plug located a tad higher than the 4x2 covers to compensate for the slightly higher pinion angle.

Tech Note 5: Product Note 2
QU40947 housings are bare except for differential bearing caps and differential cover. Some may also have the pinion bearing cups, but we recommend you replace the cups if present, due to the possibility of damage during their many years of storage.

Tech Note 6: SRW/DRW
Single Rear Wheel (SRW) and Dual Rear Wheel (DRW) axle housings are NOT interchangeable. DRW axles have longer, larger diameter spindles. Some DRW axles also have spring pads that are closer together compared to SRW axles.
