Tech Note 1: Hubs
Ford used both Dana 44 and Dana 50 IFS Twin Traction Beam® Front Axles in 1980-1996 F-250 trucks. The easiest way to tell them apart is by measuring the diameter of the wheel hub. F250 Dana 44 axles have wheel hubs that are approximately 3-5/8" in diameter. Dana 50 Hubs are about 4-1/8" in diameter.
Tech Note 2: U-Joints
QU40920 Axle Shaft takes universal joints made to Spicer 1350WJ dimensional specifications. The cup diameter for these u-joints is 1-3/16". The 4 cups are grooved to accept Inside C-Clip Snap Rings. The installed Clips fit against the machined inner faces of the axle shaft yokes. The distance between the inside of the axle shaft yoke ears is 2-3/16". For matching u-joints, see TK40712 and QU90007.
Tech Note 3: Dimensions
QU40920 is approximately 9-13/16" long from center of u-joint hole to end. The splined end is 1-1/4" in diameter x 19 splines.
Tech Note 4: Thrust Washer
Auto Hub and late production manual hubs use either a one piece or three piece thrust washer set between the end of the spindle threads and inboard mounted QU20078 axle shaft snap ring. QU40079 one piece Thrust Washer fits 1986-1992 axles. QU20077 three piece Thrust Washer Set fits 1993-1996 vehicles.
Tech Note 5: Spindle Seal
The dead, hollow spindle design of the 1983.5-1996 era Ford Dana 44 IFS axles uses one QK4734.5 needle bearing to support the outer axle shaft. Ford used two different Spindle Seal types for 1983.5-1996 Dana 44IFS Front Axles. A two part Spindle Seal and Thrust Washer design was new for 1993, replacing the earlier four piece set-up used on most trucks from 1983.5-1992. Personally, I prefer the older Seal design which can be retrofitted to 1993-1996 trucks if you order (2) QU40058 Slingers and (1) QK4739 Spindle Seal and Thrust Washer Set.
Tech Note 6: To Remove
Outer axle shaft operating failures are usually a result of either a broken axle u-joint or a dry spindle bearing. Good preventative maintenance can usually prevent those type of failures. A good number of axle shafts are also wrecked by poor service procedures during u-joint replacement. Over the years I have seen a lot of axle shafts with bent or broken yokes caused by the slam-bang u-joint removal and installation methods. A C-Frame Press with the correct adapters is both the safest and best way to remove or install axle u-joints.
