Tech Note 1: Upgraded Seals
When Dodge AAM 9-1/4" front axles first came out, axle u-joint durability was rather poor, Since that time, American Axle Manufacturing (AAM) has upgraded the seals and lubricants to substantially extend the average u-joint life. The cups are not fully seated when the u-joint is shipped as the cup seals on current production AAM u-joints are made to have a very tight fit when the u-joint is installed. Consequently, the outside span between the cup grooves of the u-joint will appear to be quite a bit wider than the listed lockup width of 2.92" when you take the u-joint out of the box. The tight seal fit also may cause some "roughness" if you rotate the cup by hand. This is normal and not a defect with the part. If, for one reason or another, you have one or more cups seated on the cross before installation, you can easily separate them if you clamp the cup in a vise and pull on the cross.

Tech Note 2: C-Clip Type
QU40765 is an internal c-clip type universal joint made to AAM 1485WJ series specifications. The cup diameter is 1-3/8" and the joint will only fit AAM 925 axle yokes that have an inside width of 2.92". QU40765 will NOT fit Spicer front axles!!!!!

Tech Note 3: Servicing
Most axle shaft universal joint service is done using makeshift tools and hammering on the parts until something gives. Axle Shafts and Axle universal joints are precise components that can be easily damaged by such slam-bang work. There is a better way to perform u-joint service using application specific press tooling and approved service procedures such as those illustrated in my four page, color illustrated, TSB4597 Dodge Truck AAM Front Axle Shaft Service Tech Bulletin. Tech Note 4: Additional Notes
Due to the amount of force needed to press out big joints like these from the axle shaft yokes, it is very easy to compress the yoke ears enough to take a "set" that will make installing the snap rings difficult or impossible. This will not only increase your blood pressure, but it will also guarantee short part life if you do force the rings in. We see this problem over and over again, in fact more universal joints and axle yokes are wrecked by slam-bang methods of u-joint replacement than by any other cause. Moral of the story is: Use the right tools and service procedures or be prepared to pay the price.
