Tech Note 1: Cold-Forged Cross 
Most U-Joint crosses are forged by one of two methods, either hot-forged or cold-forged. Cold-forged crosses are harder and more resistant to wear but the process is costly compared to hot-forging. For axle universal joints of this size, the strength of the cross does seem very critical for longevity, especially on later model trucks with fuel injected engines.

Tech Note 2: Axle Disassembly Required
To replace the Axle Shaft Universal Joints, The Wheel Hubs, Front Brakes. Spindles (on axles with Serviceable Wheel Bearings), and Axle Shafts MUST be removed. On most solid beam axles, you may also want to pull the differential cover and drain the oil to prevent Differential Oil from leaking into the axle tubes.

Tech Note 4: Dimensions
TK40712 is made to Spicer 1350WJ Universal Joint Dimensions. The cup diameter for these u-joints is 1-3/16". The 4 cups are grooved to accept Inside C-Clip Snap Rings. The installed Clips fit against the machined inner faces of the axle shaft yokes. The distance between the inside of the axle shaft yoke ears must be 2-3/16".

Tech Note 5: Tools and Manuals
More universal joints and driveshaft yokes are wrecked by slam-bang methods of u-joint replacement than by any other cause. Refer to TM3000 Driveshaft and Universal Joint Manual.
