Tech Note 1: Shaft Specs
This 32 spline axle shaft is used in Dual Rear Wheel Pickups and wide-track (pickup based) chassis cab models. For the 1987 to 1990 model years, Dodge built some DRW trucks with 1-1/2" x 35 spline axle shafts and some with 1-3/8" 32 spline shafts. The 1-1/2" shafts had tapered holes in the end and use studs and tapered wedges to retain the shafts. The 1-3/8" shafts use bolts to retain the axle shafts. Effective with the 1991 model year all trucks were built with 32 spline axle shafts. The left and right axle shaft lengths are identical. Shaft splines are 1-3/8" x 32. Shaft length is approximately 38-7/16". If you have a DRW pickup wide-track chassis cab model with 35 spline axle shafts see TK40585.

Tech Note 2: Replace Worn Side Gears
If your axle shaft splines are worn (a common occurrence), chances are the differential side gear splines are also worn. Installing a new axle shaft in worn gears will result in accelerated axle shaft spline wear which is not covered by our parts warranty. Replace worn differential side gears when replacing an axle shaft with visible spline wear!

Tech Note 3: Narrow or Wide Track?
Dodge built 1987-1993 duallys with both narrow track and wide track Dana 70 rear axles. Narrow track axles are typically found on cab and chassis models with 34" wide frame rails. Wide track axles were used on pickup models or cab and chassis trucks with 37" frame rails. TK40583 32 spline Narrow track axle shafts measure 36.94" from splined end to inside face of the axle shaft flange. TK40582 Wide track axle shafts measure 39.44" from splined end to inside face of the axle shaft flange
