Tech Note 1: Parts Book List
There is conflicting application information for rear Wheel Seal replacement between Dana and Dodge on 1994-2002 Dodge Ram Dana 60-70-80 Single Rear Wheel (SRW) rear axles because Dana used two different, but functionally interchangeable Wheel Seals in this era Dodge Ram SRW Full Float Rear Axles. As the two Seals are interchangeable, this is not a big issue, but you should know the facts. Dodge parts books list QU40450 Flangeless Seal as the replacement Seal for all 1994-1996 Dana 60, 70, 80 SRW axles and QU40449 Flanged Seal as the replacement seal for all 1997-2002 axles. Dana however, lists all 1994-2002 Dana 60 axles using QU40449 Flanged Seal. Dana catalogs list QU40450 Flangeless Seal for all 1994-2002 Dana 70, 80 SRW axles EXCEPT the following 1996-1999 axles having Axle Tag Numbers which were built with QU40449 Flanged Seal:
Dana 70: 605879, 605880, 605901, 605981, 606012, 606013, 606055, 606063, 606094, 606095, 606148, 606149, 606164, 606165.
Dana 80: 606905, 605985, 606056, 606064, 606150, 606151
Tech Note 2: Seal Installer
Wheel Seals are easily damaged when using makeshift installation tools. Use QT1500 Seal Installer for 1984 to 1993 trucks or QT1510 for 1994 to 2002 models.
Tech Note 3: Before Installing
Always lubricate the lip of your new seal with clean grease before installing the hub on the spindle!
Tech Note 4: Axle Vent System
Many wheel seal leaks are caused by pressure building in the axle due to a clogged axle vent system. Always check and clear the vent system. Other common causes of leaking seals include improper wheel bearing adjustment (See TSB4008), poor installation techniques (See Tech Notes 2 and 3 above), and worn spindle surface.
