Tech Note 1: Auto Hub Details
Ford used TKA4040 mechanical Automatic Locking Hub as an original equipment option on F250 Dana 50IFS and F350 Dana 60 Monobeam 4x4 front axles. Many of these hubs were also sold as replacements for the less reliable auto hub Ford installed on 1991-1994 model year vehicles. The 95-97 Auto Hub uses a special spindle nut that provides a friction surface for the hub drag shoe. No internal service parts were ever offered by Ford or the hub manufacturer for this hub.
Tech Note 2: Manual Hub Conversion
By now, most of the original Ford Auto Hubs have been replaced by less expensive and more reliable manual hubs. If you wish to convert to manual hubs you have to change the single spindle nut to QK4729 double nut type. On the F250 with two outer axle shaft grooves, discard the original 3 piece axle shaft thrust washer. After installing the hub body install either the original thick or new thin axle shaft snap ring in the outer axle shaft groove. For F350 axles with just an inner axle shaft snap ring groove, you can usually reuse the 3-piece thrust washer and snap ring, but there have been some instances of the not being able to fully seat the inner hub body when the original inboard thrust washer and snap ring is retained especially with Warn hubs. It is possible to run without the thrust washer and snap ring, but the better choice is have a machine shop cut new grooves in the outboard end of the axle shafts or replace the outer axle shafts with QU40486 shafts which have the outboard groove.
