Tech Note 1: To Use
Typically, pinion depth shim thickness will not need to be changed if you are doing a simple rebearing job. If you are changing gear sets using genuine Dana gearing, you can use the +/ - numbers etched on the new and old pinion heads to modify the starting shim pack thickness. To install aftermarket gear sets or a Dana gear set in a bare housing, you will need pinion depth setting tools to determine the starting shim pack thickness. Always check the tooth pattern to verify your pinion depth setting.

Tech Note 2: Pinion Bearing Baffle
The pinion depth shims in QU40390 Kit are used between the inner pinion bearing and pinion head. If present in the original axle, optional QU40527 Inner Pinion Bearing Baffle MUST also be included as part of the overall pinion height shim pack when setting pinion depth

Tech Note 3: Pinion Depth
Pinion Depth must be set before setting pinion preload. 1999-2005 Ford Dana 50 axles use optional QU40208 crush sleeve located below the outer pinion bearing to set pinion preload. Pinion preload sets the amount of torque required to rotate the pinion and it is measured with an inch pound torque wrench.
