Tech Note 1: 2002 Axle Change
Dodge used two different Ball Joint type Dana 60 front axle in Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 trucks for the 2002 model year. All 2000 to early 2002 axles are equipped with vacuum controlled Central Axle Disconnect (CAD). During the 2002 model year, there was a mid-year model change to a no disconnect, constantly engaged front axle. QU40359 ONLY fits 2000-2002.5 CAD axles. Tech Note 2: Matching U-Joints
QU40359 takes an internal c-clip type axle universal joint with 1-3/8" diameter cups. The matching axle u-joints are: QU30332 (greaseable hot-forged cross), TK40715 (Premium non-greaseable cold forged cross), and TK40724 (Premium greaseable cold forged cross).

Tech Note 3: Common Causes of CAD Engagement Problems
If you are having Central Axle Disconnect engagement problems, there is usually multiple causes. Some of the most common issues that need to be checked are:
Vacuum Shift Motor Leak: Unit will not hold steady vacuum. Replacement is required, see QK4904.
Bent Vacuum Motor Shift Rod: Replacement is required, see QK4904.
Worn Axle Shaft Bushings: Replacement is required, see QK4626.
Differential Output Shaft Splines Worn: Replacement is required, see QU10943.
Stud on End of Differential Output Shaft Worn Undersize: Replacement is required, see QU10943.
Tips of Shift Collar Splines Worn: Replacement is required, see QU40274.
Shift Fork Bent or Pads Missing: Replacement is required, see QU40156 Pads and QA4760 Fork Kit.
Vacuum Line Leak (VERY common on these older trucks): See QU11061 and QU11062
Transfer Case Vacuum Switch Bad: Replacement is required, see QU10569

Tech Note 4: Must Remove
To replace your right inner axle shaft, you must remove the brake rotor, wheel hub and axle shaft assembly from the axle.

Tech Note 5: CAD
When replacing the right inner axle shaft on your 2000-2002 Dodge Ram with Central Axle Disconnect (CAD), engage four wheel drive before starting disassembly. This will slide the CAD shift collar to the left and onto the differential output shaft splines. If you pull the shaft in 4x2 mode, the shift collar will drop out of position. If this happens, remove the CAD shift unit from the axle and align the collar with the axle shaft splines. Always replace QU40090 CAD Housing Gasket if you remove the CAD Shift Housing.

Tech Note 6: Axle Seals
Given the era of trucks this shaft fits, it is recommended you replace the inner axle seals which can become hard and brittle with age. For Inner Axle Shaft Seal Kits with oil seals and installation tools see: QK4621.
Left Seal: Pressed into the left axle tube next to the differential for all years. Differential removal is required. Use QU40298 Seal.
Right Seal: Pressed in the axle tube outboard of the CAD shift unit. CAD shift unit and right axle shaft removal required to replace seal. Use QU40271 Seal.

Tech Note 7: U-Joint Tools
Most axle shaft universal joint service is done using makeshift tools and hammering on the parts until something gives. Axle Shafts and Axle universal joints are precise components that can be easily damaged by such slam-bang work.
