Applications
Tech Note 1: Press Fit Parts
QK4035 fits early production Ford Dana 44 and Dana 50 IFS front axles. The Bearing and Locking Collar are both press fit parts. If your Seal is leaking, the locking collar must be split and the bearing pressed off.
Tech Note 2: Removing Diff Output Shaft
The differential output shaft on the early IFS axles that use this Bearing and Seal Kit can be pulled without removing the differential housing from the axle beam. A slide hammer with a long reach attachment that hooks onto the slip yoke are the best tools for the job.
Tech Note 3: Left Axle Shaft Seal
The Left Axle Shaft Seal is QU40087.
Tech Note 4: 2 Types Diff Output Shafts
Ford used two types of diff output shafts. Early production diff output shafts use QU40173 Tapered Roller Bearing Kit and can be removed by unbolting the 3 bolt external bearing retainer flange from the diff housing. Later production diff output shafts (circa 1983 and after) are retained by a snap ring at the inboard end of the diff output shaft. For these axles, you must remove the differential housing from the left axle beam to access the snap ring.
Tech Note 5: Lube
Always pregrease the tapered bearing and seal lip before installing the axle shaft in your diff housing with QU90018 or similar NLGI #2 GC-LB water resistant grease.
Tech Note 6: Check Phase
When starting the axle shaft splines into your Slip Yoke, verify that the Slip Yoke and Right Axle Shaft are as close to being in phase as possible. (The center line of the yoke holes line up to each other with little or no offset.)
Tech Note 7: Preventative Maintenance
IFS Right Diff Output Shaft operating failures are usually a result of a broken axle u-joint. Good preventative maintenance can usually prevent these type of failures. A good number of axle shafts are also wrecked by poor service procedures during u-joint replacement. Over the years I have seen a lot of axle shafts with bent or broken yokes caused by the slam-bang u-joint removal and installation methods. A C-Frame Press with the correct adapters is both the safest and best way to remove or install axle u-joints.
