Applications
Tech Note 1: Other Pinion Seals
Early and mid production Dana 80 rear axles (1988-2000 Ford and 1994-1999 Dodge) use shallow shell pinion seals that seat against a step in the housing bore when fully installed and have a clearance groove for the pinion yoke slinger. 2001 and Later Ford axles use QU40473 deep shell seal that has a metal flange that limits seal installation depth. 2000 to 2002 Dodge Dana 80 axles use two part pinion seals.
Tech Note 2: Interchangeable
QU40302 fit all 1994-1999 Dodge Model 80 rear axles and 1988-2000 Ford Ford Super Duty® as it is functionally interchangeable with QU40258 Standard Lip Seal.
Tech Note 3: Oil Seal Leaks
Oil seal leaks can be very vexing with rear axle applications. The most common cause is simply the axle vent system is plugged. When this happens, pressure builds up as the axle warms up during operation until the weakest seal fails. The cure is easy, clean the vent hose and/or fittings (usually found on the left axle tube). Another common cause is a seal wears a groove in the pinion yoke. In these cases, replacing the yoke is the way to go.
Installing stainless steel wear sleeves marketed by most major seal manufacturers would seem like a viable alternative, unfortunately, this type of repair rarely lasts long. Why? A wear sleeve increases the diameter of the yoke or spindle by 0.020"-0.040". When a stock seal, engineered for the original yoke or spindle diameter is installed over a wear sleeve, the larger installed diameter of the sleeve causes the seal to run hotter and wear much faster than normal. Result: Rapid seal wear and presto! the oil leak is back.
