QU40158 19 Spline Dana 44 Outer Axle Shaft for 1973-1979 Ford and 1972-1974 Dodge fits 1972.5-1974 Dodge W100, 1973-1979 Ford F150, 1978-1979 Ford Bronco, AND 1977-1979 Ford F250 with Dana 44 Front Axles. QU40158 is a genuine Dana Spicer part that takes a 1350WJ series axle universal joint. The splined end on these new axle shafts has two snap ring grooves so they are compatible with all types of lockout hubs and full-time solid splined drive gears (See Tech Note 2). Tech Note 1: Matching U-Joints
QU40158 Axle Shaft takes universal joints made to Spicer 1350WJ dimensional specifications. The cup diameter for these u-joints is 1-3/16". The 4 cups are grooved to accept Inside C-Clip Snap Rings. The installed Clips fit against the machined inner faces of the axle shaft yokes. The distance between the inside of the axle shaft yoke ears is 2-3/16". Tech Note 2: Snap Ring Grooves
QU40158 Axle Shaft has two snap ring grooves. The outer groove is used with most manual lockout hubs and 1-1/4" thick, stepped, splined full-time hub gears. The inner groove is typically used with single thickness and 7/8" stepped, splined full-time hub gears.

Tech Note 3: 1977 F250 Change
The Ford F250 underwent a major, mid-year model change in 1977 effective with serial number Y20001. Regular Cab F250 4x4s built before serial number Y20001 are "high boy" models with remote mount transfer cases and Dana 44 front axles with bolt-on type hub locks or drive flanges. 1977 regular cab 4x4s built after serial number Y20000 are "low boy" models with direct mount transfer cases and Dana 44 front axles with internal spline mount hub locks or drive gears. QU40158 fits Y20001 and higher serial number 1977 F250 4x4 trucks.

Tech Note 4: 1978-1979 Axles
The standard front axle on 1978-1979 Ford F-250 3/4 ton 4x4 trucks is a 3800 pound rated Dana 44 solid beam type front axle with internally splined wheel hubs. The end of the wheel hub measures about 3-5/8" in diameter and the spindle thread is 1-5/8". A 4500 pound rated Dana 60 was optional on 1978-1979 F-250 models. The optional Dana 60 will have a front wheel hub that measures about 4-1/8" at the outer end and a 2" spindle thread.

Tech Note 5: Axle Shaft Operating Failures
Outer axle shaft operating failures are usually a result of either a broken axle u-joint or a dry spindle bearing. Good preventative maintenance can usually prevent those type of failures. A good number of axle shafts are also wrecked by poor service procedures during u-joint replacement. Over the years I have seen a lot of axle shafts with bent or broken yokes caused by the slam-bang u-joint removal and installation methods. A QT1065M C-Frame Press with the correct adapters is both the safest and best way to remove or install axle u-joints.
