Tech Note 1: Identify Components
Dodge used several similar Double-Cardan Front Constant Velocity Driveshafts, but each type will have certain unique parts even though the assemblies may interchange. For instance, in the CV Joint, most 2003 and some 2004 trucks use a small size u-joint which has 1-1/16" diameter cups. All others are equipped with the larger size u-joint, 1-3/16" cups in the CV heads. You must correctly identify what type of components your driveshaft uses before ordering any parts or kits. To help you through this simple, but essential process, please see Tech Notes Front U-Joint ID, Slip Yoke Types, and CV Joint ID. You need to verify your CV shaft component sizes to ensure you order the correct Kit. Remember, an old truck may have a newer shaft or vice-versa, so be sure to order the parts by type, not just by year!
Tech Note 2: 2003-2004 Dodge Ram Front CV Driveshaft
TK3071 Rebuild Kit is Correct For Your 2003 to 2004 Dodge Ram Front CV Driveshaft IF:
A) The front driveshaft universal joint by the axle has 1-1/8" diameter cups.
B) The front universal is retained by plastic injections (original u-joint) or inside C-Clips (replacement u-joint).
C) The inside distance between the front slip yoke yoke ears is 2-5/8".
D) The two Universal Joints in the CV Joint use external snap rings and have 1-1/16" diameter cups.
E) The Slip Yoke Boot end closest to the 2-1/2" diameter tubing is roughly 1/2" forward of the weld.
