QU30332 1480WJ Axle Shaft Universal Joint for Dana-Spicer Model 50, 60, Super 60, and 61 Front Solid Beam Drive Axles An inexpensive, yet strong USA made, Hot-Forged Greaseable Universal Joint for your heavy-duty 4x4 equipped with an open-knuckle Dana 50, 60, or 61 solid beam front drive axle. We have been selling this U-Joint since the 1970's and it has proven it's durability when properly maintained. As a rule, hot-forged joints like this one are a little easier to install because their flexible seals purge air as you press the caps in. On the other hand, our Torque King® cold-forged types with their superior seals trap air under pressure during assembly which helps keep contaminants out. Remember, with it's simple seals, a hot-forged greaseable u-joint that is not regularly lubed will prematurely fail from water contamination. So, if you and your grease gun don't get together very often, we recommend you select a Torque King® joint! USA Made.

Tech Note 1: Service Life
Most U-Joint crosses are forged by one of two methods, either hot-forged or cold-forged. Cold-forged crosses are harder and more resistant to wear but the process is costly compared to hot-forging. For certain applications, such as rear driveshaft u-joints on diesel trucks, the increased wear resistance of a cold-forged cross is very important. For axle universal joints of this size, the hardness of the cross does not seem very critical for longevity. The big difference in service life comes down to lubrication and the effectiveness of the seals. With regular greasing using a quality grease like our Pyroplex Protection ES synthetic grease, this joint may outlast the rest of the truck. With poor maintenance it won't.

Tech Note 2: Size
This universal joint has 1-3/8" diameter cups and it will only fit axle yokes that have an inside width of 3". QU30332 will NOT fit 2003 and newer Dodge Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 trucks with the AAM 925 front axle!!!!!

Tech Note 3: Installing
Most axle shaft universal joint service is done using makeshift tools and hammering on the parts until something gives. Axle Shafts and Axle universal joints are precise components that can be easily damaged by such slam-bang work. There is a better way to perform u-joint service using application specific press tooling and approved service procedures.
