Applications
Tech Note 1: About
QU30037 plastic speedometer drive gear was introduced in some late 1973 or early 1974 Chevy and GMC transfer cases. Most 1973-1974 NP205 gear drive models still used smooth bore steel drive gears, however, as best as I can remember, plastic gears were used for just about all models by 1975, but, GM parts books do list the steel gear up to 1976.
Tech Note 2: GM Only
QU30037 Speedometer Gear for Chevy and GMC NP203 Chain Drive and NP205 Gear Drive Transfer Cases is a 7 tooth red or natural plastic gear with 38 internal splines that fits most GM NP205 Transfer Cases. It is unique to GM. It will NOT interchange with Dodge, Ford, and International gears!
Tech Note 3: 1990-on
I believe 1990 was the year GM switched to electronic signal generation. These cases have a steel reluctor wheel instead of a plastic drive gear. The electronic speedometer sending unit screws into the rear output housing. A magnet on the sending unit reads off the reluctor wheel. The rear output housing is different for electronic and mechanical speedometer versions.
