Tech Note 3: Lubrication
Lubricate the bearings with clean gear oil before assembly. Lubricate the pinion seal lip and pinion yoke/flange hub with clean grease prior to final assembly to provide initial lubrication.
Tech Note 4: Pinion Preload
A collapsible spacer or crush sleeve is used to set pinion rotating preload. Final assembly of the pinion in the housing is done once depth is established and the final shim is installed under the inner pinion bearing cup. Assemble the pinion, inner pinion bearing (use QT1004 to install), crush sleeve, pinion slinger/thrust washer, pinion seal, pinion yoke or flange, pinion washer and pinion nut in the housing. Use a suitable tool to hold the pinion yoke/flange in place while the pinion nut is tightened. Tighten the pinion nut until the outer pinion bearing contacts the crush sleeve. At this point, the amount of torque to further tighten the pinion nut will greatly increase and you should still be able to feel some some end-play. From here, tighten the pinion nut in SMALL increments until all end-play is gone and the pinion rotating torque with NEW bearings is 20-32 pound-INCH (2.26-3.58 Nm). If you over-tighten the pinion nut so the pinion-only rotating torque exceeds the specification, you MUST replace the crush sleeve and start over. NEVER back off the pinion nut to reduce pinion rotating torque. The above procedure and specification assumes you are installing new pinion bearings and the differential with ring gear is not yet installed in the axle housing.
