QU20816U Used Front Axle or Transfer Case Vent Fitting for vintage 4x4s. Use with 5/16" Hose. QU20816U is a good used part that is found on many 1975-1997 4x4 front axles and 1967-1972 Ford F250 Dana 24 Transfer Cases. Although simple, the axle vent system is critical to maintaining seal life and lubricant purity. QU20816U threads into the differential housing, axle tube, transfer case rear housing, or axle disconnect housing to vent excessive pressure out of the differential and to the atmosphere via a rubber hose.

Tech Note 1: Axle Venting 
Your Axle Vent System typically consists of a hollow fitting that threads into the axle, a rubber hose that typically connects to the from above the axle and usually a capped vent valve. The axle vent system allows expanding gases to escape the axle as it heats up during operation. As the axle cools when the vehicle is parked the vent allows air back into the axle to equalize the pressure inside the axle to atmospheric pressure. It also equalizes the pressures due to temperature or altitude changes. For most applications, the upper end of the rubber hose that connects to the vent fitting is located a foot or more above the axle to be above surface water and road splash, plus most hoses are capped with a simple vent valve.

Tech Note 2: Plugged Vent
A plugged Axle Vent system will usually cause seal failures due to excessive pressure building up inside the axle particularly during hot weather operation. Always check the axle vent system for obstructions when servicing the axle. A broken fitting or hose can lead to catastrophic axle failure from water getting into the axle and displacing or diluting the axle lubricant.
