Mainshaft Nut
Nut Variations
Applications
Tech Note 1: Mainshaft Nut
Factory and almost all rebuilt GM 4x4 and Dodge NV4500 NV4500 transmissions have 4 slot nuts on the output side of the mainshaft to retain the mainshaft 5th gear. Due to the high torque these nuts are tightened to, it is essential to use the correct wrench for the remove and install the mainshaft nut. All Dodge NV4500 transmissions use 1 of two sizes of spanner wrenches. NV4500HD used in Cummins and V10 powered Dodge RAM models have a large diameter mainshaft nut. For these transmissions select either QT2001 (1/2" drive) or QT2036 (3/4" Drive). For 1992-1993 NV4500 and 1994-2000 NV4500LD transmissions in gas V8 Dodge trucks use QT2002. 2001-2005 Dodge NV4500LD transmissions generally have the same 29 spline 4x4 and 31 spline 4x2 mainshafts as the HD models and require QT2001 wrench. All GM 4x4 transmissions use the smaller mainshaft nut. Most early and mid production GM NV4500 4x4 transmissions had a vibration dampener which has a recess for the mainshaft nut. QT2028 socket is required to remove/install the mainshaft nut on GM transmissions with the vibration dampener. If your GM NV4500 has the steel tube spacer tube instead of a vibration dampener, you can use either QT2002 spanner wrench or QT2028 socket.
Tech Note 2: Nut Variations:
A number of different nut types have been used to retain the NV4500 5th gear. The factory nut is always round with 4 slots as are most aftermarket nuts. For either factory or aftermarket round nuts, as long as the nut is made to the original New Venture Gear outside diameter and slot configuration our wrenches will work perfectly regardless if it is solid or split. For nuts using set screws, install the set screws after final torquing of the nut. In the past, we have seen fitment problems with some cheap, round import nuts that are made to a smaller outside diameter than factory. Rarely you may also find a hex or some other nut type retaining your 5th gear. If you have one of these wierdo nuts, our wrenches will not fit.

Well not good
This is not a good tool for the gm NV4500 IT DOSE NOT FIT its useless for 5th gear nut. Note from Torque King: As explained on our website, QT2002 will NOT fit GM 4x4 NV4500s with a vibration dampener. You need QT2028 which will fit inside the vibration dampener to remove/install the nut. QT2002 will fit all GM 4x4 NV4500 transmissions with a steel spacer tube instead of a vibration dampener.
