Tech Note 1: Gearing Selection Type
Mode and Range are the two types of gearing selection available in New Process/New Venture NV271 and NV273 2 Speed Transfer Cases. Mode Components are used to select 4x2 or 4x4 operation. In 4x4 Mode, a sliding collar engages the drive sprocket carrier which transmits power through the sprockets and chain to the front output shaft. Range components allow you to select High Range, Neutral or Low Range. Low Range gearing is accomplished using a planetary gear set. In High Range, the Input Shaft and Rear Output Shaft are direct coupled.
Tech Note 2: Common Wear Causes
Mode Shift Sleeves typically will wear in two places, on the leading edges of the clutch teeth and inside the fork groove. Wear on the clutch teeth is from forcing the unit into gear. Wear inside the fork groove is usually from direct contact with the fork after the shift pads get worn away. Replace any Mode Shift Sleeve that shows visible wear.

Tech Note 4: Same Assembly Number
When Ford (1999 models), Dodge (2003 models), and GM (2005 models) first used NV271 and NV273 transfer cases, New Process Gear (NPG) of East Syracuse N.Y. was part of New Venture Gear (NVG). When NVG dissolved, NPG continued on under Chrysler. Chrysler subsequently sold the production rights to Magna, a Canadian automotive parts company. All these name changes are confusing, but the important thing to know is a specific assembly number for any 273C, 271F, 271D, 273D, and 273F transfer case is the same and uses the same replacement parts regardless of it was built by New Venture, New Process, or Magna.
