Tech Note 1: Fitment
QK1027 can be used for both conversion and original equipment replacement applications. For early model New Venture NV4500 transmission shift covers with integral towers, QK1027 includes QK1123 Shift Stub Kit which is specific to 1992-1993 Dodge NV4500s. For conversion or upgrade applications QK1027 will also fit 1994-1997 Dodge NV4500 transmissions that originally had a press-on shaft lever and 1992-1994 GM models that had a 16mm threaded stub.

Tech Note 2: Troubleshooting
If you have an older NV4500 with the integral shaft tower (GM to 1995, Dodge to 1997), and you have trouble shifting into gear (usually 3rd or 4th) the culprit may be a worn shift tower seat. A very strong spring exerts down pressure against the shift stub. Over time, the stub will wear into the integral aluminum seat. In extreme cases, the seat wears to the point where the shift stub base will hit the shift rail. When this happens, the friction between the rail and stub can make shifting very difficult or cause the shifter stub to jump out of the rail notch. The solution is to replace QU10262 cover plate or cover assembly. The later design, QU10706 flat top cover with a removable tower is less prone to wear in the shift tower. Early and late covers are interchangeable as far as fitting the transmission goes, but you have to make sure you order the correct stub or tower to match your shifter when changing top cover types.

Tech Note 3: Installing Spring
The small end of the pressure spring is oriented down against the shift stub knuckle. The spring is quite strong so a fair amount of down pressure must be applied to the cap before you will be able to twist it into the locked position.

Tech Note 4: Installing Insert
Use a small, flat blade screwdriver when installing the shift pattern insert.

Tech Note 5: Matching Parts

Tech Note 6: Lubricants, Sealants, Threadlockers
Early production NV4500 Transmissions used an anaerobic sealant (QU90003) to seal between the main case and input bearing retainer, top cover, and rear housing. Mid-production units used anaerobic sealant just on the input retainer and RTV for everything else. Later production transmissions used black RTV Sealant (QU90006 or QU90005) for everything. Either type of sealant works fine (except the PTO covers ALWAYS should be sealed with RTV), but I prefer RTV for all components. Regardless of which sealant you use, make sure excess sealant does not block the lube access hole at the top of input retainer pilot that fits into the transmission case! Also, the threaded holes in the main case for the four retainer bolts and 12 PTO bolts are open ended, so you must use new bolts with factory applied threadlocker or apply Threadlocker (S24200) to your existing bolts to prevent oil seepage past the bolt threads. See my TM1003 NV4500 Shop Manual or VSG1003DVD NV4500 Overhaul Video for more information.
