Tech Note 1: Specs
QU10041 is a precision ground, hardened steel shaft. The approximate dimensions are 63/64" (25mm) diameter x 3-1/8" long. QU10041 acts as inner bearing race for the reverse idler gear bearings.

Tech Note 2: Early and Late Reverse
1996 and earlier Early NV4500 transmissions utilized a two-plane reverse with either 5.61:1 or 6.34:1 Reverse Gear ratios. With a two-plane reverse, the front half of the wide reverse idler gear receives power from the countershaft and it uses the rear half to transfer power to the large diameter mainshaft reverse gear. The 5.04 ratio Single-plane reverse was introduced for 1997 model year trucks. The power transfer is inline between the countershaft, narrow reverse idler gear, and small diameter mainshaft reverse gear. The reverse idler gears, reverse idler shafts, countershafts, reverse gears, and transmission cases are not interchangeable for the two types of reverse gear systems.

Tech Note 3: Common Causes of Failures
NV4500 Reverse Idler Shaft failures are rare. Wear on the shaft bearing surface wear is almost always caused by operating the transmission with incorrect or contaminated oil. The reverse idler gear is in constant contact with the countershaft so it is rotating any time the input shaft is turning. Crud in dirty oil can quickly damage the small needle rollers that ride on the idler shaft. Installing a manual transmission filter kit can help rid your transmission of magnetic and non-magnetic debris and thereby reducing the chance of premature transmission failure.
