All 2000-2002 Dana 60 Front Axles in Dodge Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 trucks had a Bill of Material Number (BOM) stamped on a Axle ID Build Tag attached to the differential by two of the differential cover bolts when the vehicle was shipped from the factory but, unfortunately, these tags are often missing on trucks that had prior differential service. The BOM number is a 6 digit number beginning with a 6 plus a dash number (ex: 611223-1). They can be used to determine not only the axle model, but also what components the axle was originally built with. We often ask for this number to insure we provide you with the exact parts you need for your truck.
Each different BOM number signifies an engineering part change which may be minor or major and may involve one or more parts. The dash number indicates the axle ratio. For 2000-2002 Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks built for civilian use, 3.54 ratio is a -1, 4.10 ratio is -2.
2000 and 2001 axles all had a vacuum controlled Central Axle Disconnect (CAD) actuator located at the center of the right axle tube. 2002 model year vehicles were built both with and without CAD. The Cad and non-CAD axles use the same differential components, hubs, knuckles, and left axle shaft.
