Description

We are often asked how a customer can identify if their 4x4 has a Standard-Duty 3/4 ton Front Axle (Dana 44 or GM 10 Bolt) or a Heavy-Duty Axle (Dana 50IFS, Dana 60, Dana 61). There are several ways, but if your axle has an internally splined hub, the easiest way is to measure the diameter of the outboard end of the wheel hub. 3/4 ton Standard-Duty wheel hubs are about 3-5/8" at the outboard end. Heavy-Duty Hubs are about 4-3/16". These measurements are taken at the outboard end of the WHEEL HUB, not the lockout hub or hub cap.

3/4 Ton trucks that were available with optional Heavy-Duty axles instead of Dana 44 axles include:
1978-1979 Ford F-250 (Dana 60)
1980-1996 Ford F-250 (Dana 50IFS Twin Traction Beam {TTB})
1980-1993 Dodge W250 (Dana 60 or Dana 61)(Dana 60 or Dana 61 standard in 1989-1993 W250 with Cummins Diesel)

1 Ton Trucks that were available with optional Light-Duty axles instead of Dana 60 axles include:
1982-1985 Dodge W350 (Dana 44)

Chevy and GMC:
Chevy and GMC did not offer an optional Dana 60 front axle for 1977-1987 3/4 ton 4x4s. However, a number of Dana 60 axles from 1 ton trucks have been retro-fitted into 3/4 ton GM 4x4s.
