Description

TK40724 TORQUE KING® Greaseable Axle Shaft 1480WJ Universal Joint for Dana-Spicer Model 50, 60, Super 60, and 61 Front Solid Beam Drive Axles A premium quality greaseable universal joint for your heavy-duty 4x4 equipped with an open-knuckle Dana 50, 60, or 61 solid beam front drive axle. Made for us by Spicer, this is our top of the line u-joint for this application! TK40724 combines the durability of a cold-forged cross, excellent seals and the ability to easily grease the joint with standard lubrication equipment. It features a triple lip seal with outer protector ring to keep grease in and water out. The best choice for use in moisture laden conditions such as snow plowing and off-roading, or for even heavy-duty farm, ranch, or contractor use. Cup Diameter is 1-3/8". Assembled in U.S.A. of domestic and imported components. For alternative u-joints for this application, see QU30332 and TK40715.

Applications

Tech Note 1: Service Life
Most U-Joint crosses are forged by one of two methods, either hot-forged or cold-forged. Cold-forged crosses are harder and more resistant to wear but the process is costly compared to hot-forging. For certain applications, such as rear driveshaft u-joints on diesel trucks, the increased wear resistance of a cold-forged cross is very important. For axle universal joints of this size, the hardness of the cross does not seem very critical for longevity. The big difference in service life comes down to lubrication and the effectiveness of the seals. The excellent seals and ability to easily grease the joint means this u-joint will probably outlast the rest of the truck even if you don't lube it on a regular basis. One of the very few parts that is as durable as the Cummins and Powerstroke diesels!

Tech Note 2: Size
This universal joint has 1-3/8" diameter cups and it will only fit Dana-Spicer Model 50, 60, and 61 solid beam axle yokes that have an inside width of 3". TK40724 will NOT fit 2003 and newer Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks with the AAM 925 front axle!!!!!

Tech Note 3: Installing
Most axle shaft universal joint service is done using makeshift tools and hammering on the parts until something gives. Axle Shafts and Axle universal joints are precise components that can be easily damaged by such slam-bang work. There is a better way to perform u-joint service using application specific press tooling and approved service procedures. See our U-Joint Tools web page or our individual Tool Pages for QT1065M C-Frame Press, QT4009 Large U-Joint Separator Yoke, QT4011 Press Tip and QT4015 Press Anvil.
