These C-Type Snap Rings fit a groove in the outer axle shaft and retain the spline thrust washer (QU20077 or QU40079). Use 1 per side. Sold individually. USA Made.

Tech Note 1: Automatic to Manual Hub Conversion
QU20078 Fits F150 and Bronco outer axle shafts with a snap ring groove at the inboard end of the axle shaft splines. It retains either a 1 piece or 3 piece thrust washer (depending upon the year) that contacts the end of the spindle. This snap ring was used with factory auto hubs and very late production manual hubs. If an auto hub truck is converted to manual hubs using Warn or most other hub brands, there may be an interference issue between QU20078 snap ring and the inner hub body. If there is an interference problem, the snap ring and thrust washer must be removed or hub damage will occur. If the axle shaft has an outer snap ring groove, install QU40614 snap ring in the outer groove after the inner hub body is installed. If your outer axle shafts do not have an outer snap ring groove you can:
A) Run without a snap ring which will lessen the effectiveness of the outer axle shaft to spindle seal, but otherwise poses no problems.
B) Remove the axle shafts and have a machine shop cut grooves in the splines. This is the preferred choice.
