Applications

Tech Note 1: Push and Twist Styles
Several different push and twist style top covers were used on early production New Venture NV4500 5 speed manual transmissions. Some had threaded bosses for control levers, some were equipped with a reverse gear shift inhibitor. QU10262 is a bare cover that replaces most of the integral tower covers used on 1992-1995 GM and 1992-1997 Dodge 1/2 ton to 1 ton conventional trucks. It does not work on vans or most commercial chassis applications.

Tech Note 2: Shift Tower Seat Wear
If you have an older NV4500 with the integral shaft tower (GM to 1995, Dodge to 1997), and you have trouble shifting into gear (usually 3rd or 4th) the culprit may be a worn shift tower seat. A very strong spring exerts down pressure against the shift stub. Over time, the stub will wear into the integral aluminum seat. In extreme cases, the seat wears to the point where the shift stub base will hit the shift rail. When this happens, the friction between the rail and stub can make shifting very difficult or cause the shifter stub to jump out of the rail notch. The solution is to replace the cover plate or cover assembly. The later design, QU10706 flat top cover with a removable tower is less prone to wear in the shift tower. Early and late covers are interchangeable as far as fitting the transmission goes, but you have to make sure you order the correct stub or tower to match your shifter when changing top cover types.

Tech Note 3: Sealant
Early production NV4500 Transmissions used an anaerobic sealant (QU90003) to seal between the main case and input bearing retainer, top cover, and rear housing. Mid-production units used anaerobic sealant just on the input retainer and RTV for everything else. Later production transmissions used black RTV Sealant (QU90006 or QU90005) for everything. Either type of sealant works fine (except the PTO covers ALWAYS should be sealed with RTV), but I prefer RTV for all components. Regardless of which sealant you use, make sure excess sealant does not block the lube access hole at the top of input retainer pilot that fits into the transmission case! Also, the threaded holes in the main case for the four retainer bolts and 12 PTO bolts are open ended, so you must use new bolts with factory applied threadlocker or apply Threadlocker (S24200) to your existing bolts to prevent oil seepage past the bolt threads. See my TM1003 NV4500 Shop Manual or VSG1003DVD NV4500 Overhaul Video for more information.

Tech Note 4: Shift Cover Maintenance
The shift cover on NV4500 transmissions was not designed to be disassembled. No factory provisions are provided for removing the 1-2 and 3-4 forks and rails. That does not mean it cannot be done. My fully illustrated, step-by-step, TM1003 NV4500 Shop Manual details proven service procedures for NV4500 shift cover disassembly and reassembly on pages 72-84.
