Tech Note 1: Inspect
When rebuilding your transmission, always inspect the forward end of your 5th gear rail for wear. Replace your Rail if you can feel the difference between the worn and unworn parts with your fingernail. This will help prevent 5th gear shifting issues.

Tech Note 2: Fork Change
Very early in the production life of the NV4500 transmission, a slight change was made to the index position of the 5th Gear Fork. Other than a Tech Service Bulletin and a change in the Fork and Rail part numbers the change was inconsequential to those of us in the repair business as it only applied to 1992 model year transmissions. QU10016 Fork is the later design Fork with casting number 18937. If you have a Fork needing replacement with casting number 18304, I recommend you replace it with QU10211 Fork and Rail Assembly which includes the redesigned fork.

Tech Note 3: Shift Rail Locations
The New Venture NV4500 transmission has four shift rails, three of those, including the 5th-Reverse Rail are in the top cover. The fourth rail which is for 5th gear, is located partly in the transmission case, and it is controlled indirectly by the reverse shift fork through a connecting arm or lug.

Tech Note 4: Replace
To replace the NV4500 5th Gear Shift Rail, the transmission should be out of the truck with the top cover and rear housing removed. You will need a long reach punch like QT9300 8" Punch to remove the roll pin from QU10736 5th Gear Lug. I recommend you refer to my fully illustrated, step-by-step, TM1003 NV4500 Shop Manual for  service procedures.

Tech Note 5: Lubricants, Sealants, Threadlockers
Early production NV4500 Transmissions used an anaerobic sealant (QU90003) to seal between the main case and input bearing retainer, top cover, and rear housing. Mid-production units used anaerobic sealant just on the input retainer and RTV for everything else. Later production transmissions used black RTV Sealant (QU90006 or QU90005) for everything. Either type of sealant works fine (except the PTO covers ALWAYS should be sealed with RTV), but I prefer RTV for all components. Regardless of which sealant you use, make sure excess sealant does not block the lube access hole at the top of input retainer pilot that fits into the transmission case! Also, the threaded holes in the main case for the four retainer bolts and 12 PTO bolts are open ended, so you must use new bolts with factory applied threadlocker or apply Threadlocker (S24200) to your existing bolts to prevent oil seepage past the bolt threads.
