Externally, 1975-1976 trucks pretty much look the same as 1972-1974 vehicles, but several BIG changes occured for the 4x4 line. On the positive side, Disc Brakes became standard on all the W series 4x4s. For the 1 ton W300, an all new, tight-turning 4500 pound rated Dana 60 open knuckle axle replaced the closed knuckle Dana 70 previously used. Unfortunately those positives were more than cancelled out by the replacement of the rugged NP205 transfer case with the troublesome, fuel sucking NP203 full time case. Even worse for the W100 and W200 was the change from the tough and proven dead spindle Dana 44 front axle design to the poorly designed Dana 44 live spindle axle introduced in 1974 for the Ramcharger.
